| Needs a Heart Transplant | Krizinne's Story | |||||
![]() |
I want to tell you about 24 year-old Krizinne Cross from the town of Dubois, Wyoming. Krizinne is a survivor of osteogenic sarcoma, a cancer that was treated successfully with chemotherapy. However, the chemo had late effects resulting in Krizinne being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a disease that enlarges and weakens the heart muscle causing irreparable damage. Heart specialists at a Salt Lake City hospital have determined that Krizinne’s only real chance of survival is a heart transplant. Modern medicine can save her life, although the corresponding financial challenge is one she can not meet alone. Fortunately, Krizinne was placed on the waiting list for a new heart, yet a transplant date can not be pre-determined. She and her boys must move to Salt Lake City to be present and ready when a heart becomes available. The operation costs an estimated $500,000. Krizinne’s insurance has been maintained since her battle with cancer in 1997. Even still, initial out-of-pocket expenses are estimated at $250,000. Additional funds will be needed for post-transplant medications for the rest of her life.
